The history of Coorg dates back to ancient times, with references in texts like the Puranas and epics like the Ramayana.  The Kadambas, Cholas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara Empire are a few who ruled Coorg. It became an independent kingdom in the 17th century under the Haleri Dynasty.

The most famous ruler of Coorg was Raja Veerarajendra. He played a significant role in shaping the district’s culture and history. After India attained independence, Coorg became a C state with a chief minister. After the reorganization of Indian states in 1956, Coorg merged into Karnataka state.

Coorg’s culture is a unique blend of indigenous traditions and influences from neighbouring regions. The Kodavas, the native people of Coorg, have their distinct language, Kodava Takk, and are known for their bravery, martial arts, and reverence for nature.

Kodavas celebrate festivals like Puttari (festival of new harvest) and Kailpodh (worshipping of agricultural instruments) with great reverence. It allows visitors to experience the vibrancy of Coorg’s cultural heritage.

Coorg is often called the “Coffee Capital of India” due to its extensive coffee plantations. The British introduced coffee cultivation to the region in the 19th century. The fertile soil, moderate climate, and abundant rainfall made it an ideal place for coffee cultivation. Today, these verdant plantations cover vast expanses of the district and produce some of the finest coffee beans in the country.
