Sringeri is the first Mutt among the four, established on the banks of river Tunga in 8th century BCE by Adi Shankaracharya the exponent of Advaitha Philosophy.

it derives its name from the Rishyasrungagiri a hill nearby.

As the legend goes, Adi Shankara selected this place to establish a Math after witnessing a Cobra with its expanded hood providing shelter from a hot sun to a frog in labour.

As it is located in the heart of malenadu-highest rain fall area- it receives an average rainfall of 380 cm during the monsoon months of July August and September. The average annual temperature would be 23′ C with temperature reaching 32’C during the summer month of April and reaches a minimum temperature is 16’C during winter months of December and January.
