Nagarahole National park is a premier Tiger Reserve in Mysore and Coorg/Kodagu districts of Karnataka. It is in the Nilgiri Biosphere, one of the 18 biospheres of the world.

The national park shares its boundaries with Bandipur National Park and Tholpetty range of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala.

Some ranges of the park lies on the back waters of  Kabini dam. In summer, heard of Elephants, Bison, spotted deer and Tiger flock to back waters to drink water.

Nagarahole and Lakshmana theertha rivers flow inside  the park. The National park is rich in flora and fauna. The major tree species of Teak, Sandalwood, Mahogany and Bamboo are extensively grown here.

You will find Asian Elephant, Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Spotted Deer, Sambar deer, Sloth Bear, Bison Malabar Civet and species of reptiles like Python, King Cobra and Cobra here.

Nagarahole Weather

The park has tropical climate with dry weather during summer months of March to June. The average maximum temperature during summers are between 32’C to 34’C. However after the arrival of  pre monsoon showers the temperature cools down a little.

Winters months between November and March are cool and pleasant for sighting wild animals in their natural habitat. Monsoon months are between June and October. It receives heavy rains during monsoon.

Best time to visit Nagarahole National Park

Post monsoon months between October to June is ideal for visiting for safari. Avoid monsoon months as the safari inside the National park will be suspended due to heavy rainfall.

Safari Timings

Safari inside National park is twice daily.

Morning session-6.00 am to 9.00 am and

Evening session- 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

However, during heavy monsoon months safari is not held.

How to reach Nagarahole National Park

It is not connected by rail and air. You can reach Nagarhole by road only.

By road- It is 220 km from Bangalore and 90 km from Mysore
By rail –  The nearest rail head is Mysore.
By air – Kannur International airport is the nearest at 115 km. Mangalore International airport is at 230 km and Bangalore International airport is at 262 km.

Accommodation in Nagarahole National Park

There are no hotels/resorts inside Nagarahole National Park. Only forest guest house and dormitories are available. You have to book forest guest house in advance. However, a number of comfortable Coffee plantation Home stays for all budget ranges are available out side the park.
