Kabini, the private  hunting area of the Mysore Kings and the British in the 20th Century is now one of the best wild life sanctuaries in India. It is named after the river that takes birth in the adjacent Wayanad and flows through the National park.

It is part of Nagarahole National Park and is under the Project Tiger Program of the Government of India. It shares the border with Bandipur National park and Wayanad wildlife sanctuary of Kerala.

Wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers will enjoy the National Park in terms of wild life sighting and the greenery around. You can sight Tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Bison, spotted Deer , Sambar Deer and sloth Bear. Black Panther the highly endangered species are sighted here.

The virgin forests are a treat to the eyes of nature lovers.

The dam across the river Kabini is the perennial source of water to the wild life of Kabini. You can find heard of Elephants and Bison frequenting the backwaters of the dam

The weather is very hot during summer months between April and June with mercury touching 35 degree Celsius.  Winter is very short with mercury touching 13 degree Celsius. The monsoon between July  and September  receives heavy rainfall.

Best time to visit Kabini

The best time to visit is between October and May when the monsoon has just receded and the dam is full. Safari inside the Tiger reserve would be operational. The road connecting Mysore and Wayanad passes through the National park. In order to allow free movement of the wild animals the road is closed for traffic between 6.00 pm and 6.00 am.

The monsoon months between June and September is not ideal to visit as the rains is heavy that stops the safari inside the National Park. Winter months between November and March is most ideal time and Tiger sighting is possible.

Activities in Kabini

You can engage in boating/coracle ride on the backwaters of Kabini dam.  Safari inside the Tiger Reserve for chance sighting of wild animals in their natural habitat is the most sought after activity.

Safari is conducted twice daily. Morning 6.00 am to 9.00 am and evening 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm.  Safari is not possible during monsoon months between June and September.
