Darjeeling located at an altitude of 6,700 feet MSL in the lower Himalayas is a beautiful hill station in the state of West Bengal India. The beautiful tea gardens, cool climate has made Darjeeling one of the best hill stations in Eastern part of India. No wonder that it has  earned the name of Queen of Hills.

The sight of sunrise view of Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world-28169 feet- and the highest peak in India that is visible from Tiger Hill in Darjeeling makes the visit memorable. You have be present in Tiger Hill by 4.30 am to behold the mesmerizing sight of sunset.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway-Toy train established in 1881 and still running – has been declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site. It is a treat to travel by the narrow gauge train. The Toy train passes through a loop on its journey to that makes your visit  worth while.

Darjeeling weather

It enjoys subtropical highland climate. The average maximum temperature is 20’C and average minimum temperature is 1.5’C. The summer months are between April and August  with temperature ranging between 18’C and 20’C. Winter months between November and March are extremely cool with temperatures ranging between 6.5’C and 1.5’C. Monsoon arrives in the month of July with heavy rains followed by land slides in some parts.

How to reach Darjeeling

You  can reach by road, rail and by air. Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri the twin towns are the nearest broad gauge railway stations.

By road- It is 80 km from New Jalpaiguri. Once you reach New Jalpaiguri you can hire a cab or catch the Toy train to reach Darjeeling.

By air-The nearest airport is in Bagdogra at 95 km. It takes 3 hours to reach  from the airport.

Best time to visit Darjeeling

It enjoys summer during April and June, Monsoon between July and September and winter between October to March. The summer months are ideal for visiting Darjeeling as the temperatures does not exceed 24’C and very pleasant for sightseeing. The monsoon months is not advisable as there may be road blocks due to land slides on account of heavy monsoon rains.
