Bandipur National Park was created in 1931 by the then Maharaja of Mysore. It was named as Venugopala Wild life park. The area was 90 square km Later in 1973 the Government of India named it as Bandipur National park and included it in the Project Tiger Program with an adding 800 square km.

Bandipur shares its border with Mudumalai wild life sanctuary in Tamilnadu and Wayanad Wild life Sanctuary of Kerala. Together the total area surpasses 2,000 square km. The entire area comes under the Nilgiri Biosphere one of the 18 biospheres of the world.

Bandipur is located at a distance of 80 km from Mysore on the way to Ooty a beautiful hill station. The route is always busy with vehicular traffic and there are a lot of fatal accidents by speeding vehicles resulting in the death of wild animals. On account of this the Government of Karnataka has banned vehicular movement between 9.00 pm and 6.00 am.

Bandipur is famous for the safari conducted in the morning and the evening. You can sight wild animals like Asian Elephants, Bison, Spotted deer, Sambar deer, Sloth bear, Leopard if luck smiles on you even a Tiger in their natural habitat.

By road- Bandipur is located at a distance of 220 km from Bangalore via Mysore

There are safaris inside the National park twice daily. Each safari is of 1 hour duration.

Bandipur has moderate weather throughout the year. The months from March to June are summer months during which time the temperature will be between 30-35 degree Celsius. The wi9nter months from November and March are pleasant with temperatures ranging between 11’C to 22’C. Monsoon months are between June and September.
